The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is seeking an intern to assist in the creation of a strategic technology solution to facilitate the online reporting of time-series human development indicators. The intern will work in a small technology team within the HDRO. As of May 2008, the project is in the requirements gathering phase and development will start shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution in the development process in both design and implementation. The application is expected to be developed using predominately the Java programming language (and related technologies).
The successful candidate will be required to work at UNDP Headquarters (in midtown Manhattan, New York City). This is a full-time position. In accordance with the UNDP policy on internships the successful candidate must be enrolled in a graduate programme and be expecting to return to their studies after the internship. As with all UNDP internships this position is unpaid.
Assist in the requirements gathering, analysis, design, implementation, documenting, testing and rollout of the new HDRO system. The majority of the successful candidate’s time is expected to be spent programming using the Java programming language (J2SE). Other related duties as required.
The successful candidate is expected to have a demonstrably good working knowledge of the Java programming language and strong computer programming skills. The candidate should relish the challenge of programming a robust application and enjoying working with users to elicit requirements. Experience with Java Swing will be an asset. Appreciation of the software development process, including source code control, unit testing and build management, is a further plus.
Written and spoken proficiency in English is required. Proficiency in other official UN working languages is desirable.
