What is Human Development?

By Visitors of the Human Development Report Website

The 1990 HDR defined human development as “a process of enlarging people’s choices”.  This in turn requires the freedom of people to make their choices and the opportunities to realize them. This definition has been used in HDRs to look at a range of the key global issues of our time, such as globalization, gender equality, human rights and climate change that facilitate or impede human development.

The concept has evolved and adapted as the world has changed, but the fundamental element of making people the centre of development remains. To celebrate 20 years of human development, we are asking:  "What is Human Development?" What are the its essential elements, how it affects your life and your community, how you would define it?

"For me, human development in daily life means, I have opportunities for building my capacity, realizing my potential, have access to opportunities for utilizing improved capacity, assurance of physical security and freedom to act in light of great human values. Much is needed to be done for breaking the international power structure, corruption, exploitative values and behaviors for ensuring the real improvement in HDIs. State and governments are key players, untill and unless they own HD agenda in word and spirit, significant change can not be brought. States of developing world are trapped in 'security-pradigms' and that situation is responsible for eating resources of our future generations in the name of 'security'. It is also causing frustration, hopelessness, inculcation of value-less survival strategies, individual and class opportunism. But HOPE should never die. By keeping the hope alive in every human being, we can accelerate Human Development efforts. So, we also need to understand the prerequisites of hope and motivation. My best wishes for those who are struggling for human development sincerely, sagaciously and with courage."

Marin Damien, wrote:

Therefore, information paralyzed human metal, physical values to be uneven in growth, development and depletion. In such conditions the United Nations development report 2010 is trying to resolve the human developmental crisis be leaving the head and tail part. The reaming body part of corporate, government and common people is very busy in exploiting one another to gain huge profits or gain power or get relieved form poverty by leaving behind the biological relationship of mutualism held in their head and tail part. The gender/genetic information and communication between head and tail part of society/genome is missing due to gender inequities from prehistory which need to be analyzed and reformed to develop humans. Rest all stories are going to be vain by using Human development funds at United Nations and elsewhere among various governments around the world for audit and accounts purposes to run their lifestyle."
