2002 UNDP Awards for Human Development

In December 2002 over 200 people gathered for the UNDP Awards for Human Development ceremony at the Morgan Library in New York City to honor NHDRs from the Arab Region, Bolivia, Botswana, Chile, Indonesia and Nepal for excellence in five different categories. A representative of each winning NHDR team came to New York to participate in the ceremony hosted by UN Administrator Mark Malloch Brown and Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer. The ceremony attracted a number of high profile development leaders from both within and outside of the UN community who came to publicly recognize the contributions of the NHDRs.

NHDRs are crucial analytical tools for promoting human development around the world. The Awards Programme ensures that the reports continue to exhibit excellence and reflect the changing nature of the field of development. The 2002 UNDP Awards for Human Development, supported with generous funding from the UN Foundation, recognized excellence in six awards categories: Quality of Analysis; Policy; Participatory and Inclusive Process; Innovations in Measuring Human Development; and Outstanding Contribution to Human Development.

The evening was an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the achievements so far of the NHDRs, ten years after the first NHDR by Bangladesh in 1992.

For the 2007 Awards process, over 50 nominations were received from 39 countries. Debate during the April 12 Final Judging Panel - comprised of HRH Princess Basma, Jordan, HRH Crown Prince Haakon, Norway, President Jorge Quiroga, Bolivia, and Dr. Gita Sen, India - reflected an exceptionally competitive process among Human Development Reports.
