Personal security is important when travelling in the country. Nairobi, like other major cities in the world, experiences varied security problems. Car jacking is a daily menace and it is advisable for drivers and passengers to have doors and windows closed and to be alert at junctions or intersections and in traffic jams; avoid lonely roads and driving at night to minimize risk. Giving lifts to strangers should be avoided.
Pedestrians should avoid walking in the city centre at night and lonely areas unless in groups and avoid wearing jewellery when going into the city centre. Jewellery and other personal effects are easily snatched by pickpockets and recovery is almost impossible.
Travel out of Nairobi should be made only during the day and with caution avoiding security risk areas, such as the north-eastern and northern parts of the country. It is advisable for those intending to travel to consult with the UNON Security Office on the current situation of security in the areas.
The basic unit of currency is the Kenya Shilling (Kshs.). Currency notes are issued in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000. The Kenya shilling is based on floating exchange rates. The current exchange rate to the US dollar fluctuates between 60 - 62 Kenyan Shillings.
