Poverty is a fairly recent field of interest in Burkina Faso. Before 1996 there were no special programs or strategies dealing with poverty issues in the country. The aim of the report is to assess the action undertaken in the field of poverty alleviation.

The first ZDHR was produced in 1997 with Poverty as its theme. It reviewed the progress and challenges that Zambia faced during the 1990s in promoting human development, and showed that poverty was high in Zambia with nearly 70% of the population below the poverty line.
