Luxembourg Income Study Summer Workshop

The 2010 LIS Annual Summer Workshop will be held in Walferdange, University of Luxembourg Campus

The Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) Summer Workshop is a one-week workshop designed to introduce researchers in the social sciences to comparative research in income distribution, employment and social policy using the LIS database. LIS welcomes applications from researchers with varying levels of knowledge and experience. The language of instruction is English.

The Luxembourg Income Study has made comparable nearly 200 microdata sets that contain comprehensive measures of income, employment and household characteristics for nearly 40 countries. The countries include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Uruguay. 

By the end of the workshop, attendees will be fully trained to use the database independently. Workshop faculty includes the LIS directors, Janet Gornick and Markus Jäntti, the LIS staff and guest lecturers.   

The workshop format includes a mix of lectures on comparative research, laboratory sessions and individual one-on-one advisory sessions. Attendees will also be introduced to the new Luxembourg Wealth Study (LWS). 

NOTE: Students who attend the 2010 LIS Workshop will also attend an associated LIS conference:

"Inequality and the Status of the Middle Class: Lessons from the Luxembourg Income Study"

The 2010 Workshop will feature a special and unique agenda!

On Tuesday (June 29) and Wednesday (June 30), all workshop students will attend an on-site conference on inequality. At the conference, senior scholars from several countries will present new papers that use the LIS or LWS data.
Presenters will include Andrea Brandolini, Louis Chauvel, Nancy Folbre, Janet Gornick, Holly Sutherland, Margarita Estévez-Abe, Serge Allegrezza, Timothy Smeeding, Bruce Bradbury, Philippe Van Kerm, Markus Jäntti, Eva Sierminska, Lane Kenworthy, David Jesuit, Vincent Mahler and Colin McKenzie.

Keynote lectures will be given by Paul Krugman and Anthony Atkinson.

Aldi Hagenaars Memorial Award will present his/her paper, as will the second recipient of the World Bank/LIS Gender Research Award.

Tuition of €1,400 covers instructional materials, single-occupancy accommodations, and full board. Transportation to and from Luxembourg is the responsibility of the student.
