Zambia bags UNDP human development award

Times of Zambia

By Times Reporter
ZAMBIA has scooped this year’s United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) human development award competition that was held in the United States a fortnight ago.

Zambia National Human Development Report (ZNHDR) committee chairperson, Muyunda Mawanalushi, said there were 60 country awards and one Mahbub ul Haq award for outstanding leadership in human development.

Professor Mwanalushi said yesterday Zambia beat Kazakhstan 2003 and Tajikistan 2003 in the excellence in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) award category.

Prof Mwanalushi who received the award on behalf of Zambia in the US, was speaking in Lusaka yesterday when he handed over the trophy to the UNDP representative in Zambia, Aeneas Chuma.

The ZNHDR 2003 with its theme ‘eradication of extreme poverty and hunger in Zambia, an agenda for enhancing the achievement of the MDGs’ was the one which was presented for the competition.

Prof Mwanalushi said the ZNHDR 2003 report tackled and demonstrated the interconnectedness of all the MDGs.
“The report was judged to be one with greatest potential as an advocacy tool to promote the involvement of national and international policy communities in attaining the MDGS,” he said.

Prof Mwanalushi stressed that the report carried three vital messages for Zambians among them, the fact that Zambia had undergone a deep crisis manifested in rising poverty and hunger.

He said another message the report carried was that every Zambian had a role to play in battling poverty and hunger, a fight the country could not afford to lose.

Prof Mwanalushi said the report would remain relevant to Zambia for a long time given the poverty levels that obtained in the country.

“I, therefore, urge the Government and other stakeholders to seriously consider incorporating the report’s recommendations in their poverty reduction programmes,” he said.

Prof Mwanalushi said with courage, determination and unity of purpose, Zambians could win the fight against poverty and hunger.

Mr Chuma, in a speech read for him by Abdoulie Sireh-Jallow, said the report had scored some successes in attaining the MDGs as shown by the award Zambia had won.

He said the NHDR like the UNDP’s global human development report were advocacy tools used to promote human development and facilitated debate and dialogue on critical development issues.
