Inequalities in health, education, and income in Mexico were revealed Monday in the Human Development Index of Municipalities.
A report released by the United Nations Development Program in Mexico
magnified the regional inequalities observed and documented in the 2002
Human Development Report for Mexico. The index measures development
through health, education, and income levels. Of the 2,426
municipalities surveyed, the top 10 showed a level of human development
on par with several European countries and New Zealand. The 10
municipalities with the lowest development scores were, in some cases,
ranked lower than ratings in Sub-Saharan Africa and among the lowest in
the world.
Five of the top 10 most developed municipalities were located in Mexico
City, while the least developed were all located in the southern
Mexican states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Guerrero.
