National Human Development Report Officially Presented

Democracy, Elections and Human Rights in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Family, Women and Children Affairs and the United Nations Development Program held Monday an official presentation of National Human Development Report 2007 on “Gender Relations: Tendencies and problems”.

Results of the national survey conducted for the first time on gender relations in Azerbaijan and impact of these relations to the gender balance are investigated in this report, which has been developed by the financial support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy to Baku.

The event gathered some parliamentarians, representatives of the governmental and non-governmental structures. Chairwoman of the State Committee Hijran Huseynova said the survey is of great importance for revealing and solving of problems in this field.

She said the problems in this field are related to some reasons, which include the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, lack of information, unawareness of women about their rights, stereotypes existed in education, family and etc.

UN Resident Coordinator for Azerbaijan Bruno Pouezat and Ambassador of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Baku Jon Ramberg, the UNDP expert on gender issues Ayshe Ayata stressed the significance of the report.
