The Mpohor Wassa East District Chief
Executive, Edward Tawiah Amprofi has called on the public to regard
issues related to children as a matter of concern to all in order to
handle them with utmost care. Mr. Tawiah Amprofi made the call in a
speech read on his behalf at a durbar organized by Children and Youth
in Broadcasting, Curious Minds in collaboration with the Department of
Children with support from UNICEF at Ekutuase. It was on the theme,
Curbing Child Labour away from Development..
Mr. Edward
Tawiah Amprofi said, the Ghana Human Development Report for 2007,
indicates that, child labour especially in its worst forms has emerged
as major phenomenon exposing young people to considerable risks and
accidents. He said, under the Children’s Act, Labour is exploitative
if it deprives a child of health care, education and personal
development. Mr. Tawiah Amprofi said, among other things, the child
has the right to parental property, education and social well being,
activity and opinion. But despite this, the child also owes the
parents some forms of duties and responsibility.
The regional
Director of the Department of Children, John Hackman said, child labour
is a major global right violation especially in the poverty stricken
areas. Mr. Hackman therefore urged parents to help eliminate child
labour in all forms.
