Nigerian President Calls for Global Commitment on Climate Change

Radio Nigeria-Abuja

Excerpt from report by state-owned Radio Nigeria from Abuja on 28 November
Nigeria has expressed the need for the global community to respect commitments made on the United Nations
Conventions on climate change.

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua gave the challenge yesterday in his keynote address to the regional launch of the
2007-2008 Human Development Report of the United Nations, held in Abuja.

President Yar'Adua said the negative impact of climate change was felt more in Africa and other developing
countries and would reduce agricultural produce if not checked. [Passage omitted]

President Yar'Adua therefore called for the Global Environment Fund to be made easily accessible to developing
countries to fast track the adaptation activities in building resilience.

In an address, the UN assistant secretary-general and regional director-general of UNDP in Africa, Mr Gilbert
Houngbo, called for an action plan to be taken, based on the report. [Passage omitted]

A State House correspondent, Suleiman Musa, reports that the launch of the 2007/2008 Human Development report
with the theme "Fighting climate change; human solidarity in a divided world" was attended by diplomats,
environmentalists and the business community.
