A program officer with the United Nations Development Program has told a gathering in Samoa there is no issue more urgent than the need for action on climate change.
Pacific Magazine reports Thomas Jensen, the UNDP's Sustainable Energy Advisor, saying climate change is not only an environment issue, but also a human development issue that regional governments must include in their policies.
He says the latest UNDP human development report shows that while climate change will undermine international efforts to combat poverty, the two issues require interrelated efforts.
He says the world has less than a decade to change course.
The UNDP's activities in the region include research into the use of wind energy in the Cook Islands, Samoa, Fiji and Tuvalu, and the move to make 100 per cent of Tokelau's energy needs from solar and coconut oil.
