Lanzamiento del Informe en Bangkok, Tailandia

La serie internacional de lanzamientos del Informe sobre Desarrollo Humano 2009 "Superando barreras: Movilidad y desarrollo humanos", comenzó en Bangkok, Tailandia, a las 10:00 AM el 5 de octubre de 2009 con el Primer Ministro de Tailandia, Khun Abhisit Vejjajiva, Helen Clark, Administrador del PNUD, y Jeni Klugman, Director y autor principal del Informe 2009. Desde entonces, más de 50 presentaciones nacionales y regionales se han producido en todas las regiones del mundo.

Migration’s Middlemen: Regulating Recruitment Agencies in the Philippines-UAE Corridor

Private recruitment agencies are key intermediaries in international migration. They facilitate, and sometimes drive, temporary labor migration to an increasing number of countries today. In origin, transit, and destination countries, recruitment agencies guide prospective migrants through immigration processes and travel requirements, match employers and workers, and provide information about living and working conditions. For many migrants, however, deception and abuse are part of the package delivered by labor recruiters.

3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development

The Global Forum on Migration and Development is a voluntary, non-binding and informal consultative process open to all States Members and Observers of the United Nations. On the 16th of December 2008, Greece assumed the annual Presidency of the 3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development- GFMD, as well as and the organisation of similar meetings that will take place in Athens between the 2nd and 5th of November 2009 under the title: “INTEGRATING MIGRATION POLICIES INTO DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL”. The meeting will be conducted into two parts: the first part is dedicated to Civil Society Days, on the 2nd and 3rd of November, while the second is the Government part, on the 4th and 5th of November.

Globalization has made international migration easier in many respects. The cost of travel has dropped; information about opportunities in destination countries has increased; the incentives to migrate are high, partly as a result of such increased information flows. These incentives are shared by those with the skills that are sought by destination countries as well as by those who do not possess them, or who migrate for other reasons, for instance as refugees, asylum-seekers, or family dependents.
