The increasing proportion of immigrants in the population of many countries has raised concerns about the ‘absorption capacity’ of the labour market, and fuelled extensive empirical research in countries that attract migrants. Professor Poot will present conclusions from meta -analyses of the impact of immigration on wages and employment of native-born workers. They take an encompassing approach and consider a broad range of labour market outcomes such as wages, employment, unemployment and labour force participation and relate this with perception of the local population and with several characteristics of the country and the migrant.
About the Speaker
Jacques Poot is Professor of Population Economics, Population Studies Centre, University of Waikato, New Zealand. He is a Honorary Fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and is an professor in the Department of Spatial Economics at VU University Amsterdam. Professor Poot is an External Fellow of the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM) at University College London and an Affiliate of Motu Economic and Public Policy Research in Wellington. Professor Poot's research interests include all aspects of the economics of population (such as migration, fertility, labour force, and ageing) and especially the geographical dimension of these topics. He is currently objective leader of a large research programme focusing on the economic integration of immigrants in New Zealand. He has also carried out research projects in a wide range of other areas, such as: meta-analysis of non-experimental social science research; monopsony in local labour markets; the impact of geography on economic growth and regional development.
