Integration Strategies: Issues and Possible Solutions

Rio Conference Room, FF-9th Floor
3 December 2008

Time: 12.30- 2.00 p.m.

Topic

Integration of immigrants into the societies of host countries has been a key issue in recent migration debates. How does the debate differ between Europe and North America? What policy lessons can be drawn? The speaker will discuss some theory and practice relating to the integration of migrants into their host societies and draw on some recent trans-Atlantic research to highlight the practical difficulties and options with which policy makers and practitioners are confronted. The presentation will aim to provoke a discussion on a topic on which there are no set solutions and consider the different approaches to the integration dilemma adopted in Europe, the U.S. and Canada. It will also address the question of the disaffection of immigrants in Europe and why they do not feel a sense of belonging.

About the Speaker

He was formerly an official at the European Commission from 1974 to 2003 latterly dealing with immigration and asylum. He was European Union Fellow at Duke University for the academic year 1996-7.
