As part of background research for this year’s global Human Development Report, HDRO has commissioned the development of a new multidimensional poverty measure (MPI) that reflects the joint distribution of disadvantages – the multiple deprivations that can confront households at the same time. This index, which is closely linked to key MDG indicators, enables fascinating new insights.
This seminar will present the MPI’s methodology and key findings which emerge from its application across a large number of developing countries. The index captures deprivations in core human functionings and basic services for households across 108 countries. It reveals different patterns of poverty than monetary based measures alone, as it illuminates a different set of deprivations.
The presentation will review the conceptual links between the capability approach and multidimensional poverty measurement, outline methodological and data issues, and highlight major findings for discussion.
About the Speaker
Sabina Alkire directs the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), a research centre within the Department of International Development, University of Oxford. In addition, she is a Research Associate at Harvard and Secretary of the Human Development & Capability Association (HDCA). Her research interests includemultidimensional poverty measurement and analysis, welfare economics, the capability approach, the measurement of freedoms and human development. Publications include ‘Valuing Freedoms: Sen’s Capability Approach and Poverty Reduction’, as well as articles in Philosophy and Economics. She holds a DPhil in Economics, an Msc in Economics for Development and an MPhil in Christian Political Ethics from Magdalen College, Oxford.
