Topic
This seminar will present an overview of issues relating to demographic transition and sustainability questions. A presentation of recent findings will illustrate how to incorporate age-related questions into human development analysis. Four brief presentations will introduce the following topics and case studies:

2. Dr. Penny Vera Sanso; Lecturer Development Studies; Birkbeck College London: Extending Human Development to the Older Poor: Ageing in South India, the case of Chennai
3. Fiona Clark: Programme Director Latin America Regional Centre HelpAge International: What age disaggregated poverty data can tell us: the case of Bolivia
4. Jeff James: Regional director for the Caribbean HelpAge International: Reflections on intergenerational issues in the context of the migration, urbanisation and humanitarian crisis

About the Speakers
Sylvia Beales, development and human rights specialist, joined HelpAge International in 1999 with responsibility for developing HAI’s external programme of global policy engagement and action relating to social protection, poverty, HIV/AIDS, rights and discrimination and citizenship. Sylvia Beales is the author of a range of papers on ageing and development, ageing and gender, intergenerational approaches to development, human rights, HIV/AIDS, inclusive development, MDGs and social protection. Her recent work includes policy input to the Africa programme ‘Investing in Social Protection in Africa’ in collaboration with the African Union Social Affairs Commission, support to the establishment of the Africa Civil Society Platform on Social Protection and taking forward HAI work on ageing and climate change.
Dr Penny Vera-Sanso has undertaken extensive field research in urban and rural Tamil Nadu, South India since 1989. She is the Principal Investigator of a three year project researching ageing and poverty in the slums of Chennai, India between 2007-10. This work built on her research into ageing and poverty amongst landless Dalit (formerly known as ‘Untouchables’) in 2000 and poverty in Chennai between 1989-1992. Penny Vera-Sanso is lectures in Development Studies and Social Anthropology at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Fiona Clark, HelpAge International Regional Director of Programmes for Latin America, has been working with HelpAge International since 2001. Since 2005 she has headed up the programme team in the Regional Development Centre for Latin America based in La Paz, Bolivia, overseeing programming on social pensions and incomes, access to health services, emergency response and disaster risk reduction for vulnerable older people in Latin America. She has also participated with the regional team in a number of policy processes, including the 5 year review of the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing for Latin America and the Caribbean, supervising a process of gathering older people´s own voices and perceptions in Bolivia, Colombia and Peru to present a “bottom up” review and appraisal of the implementation of the plan in 2007. More recently the Bolivia programme team has been working with the UNDP country office in Bolivia on the inclusion of the perspectives of older people in the 2010 HDR on “Inequalities and social mobility” resulting in the production of a “Cuaderno de Futuro” on ageing in Bolivia to complement the HDR.
Jeff James joined HelpAge International as Regional Representative for the Caribbean in September 1997. Before joining HelpAge Jeff worked in different positions for Save the Children- Canada: in his native St Vincent and the Grenadines, and finally in Jamaica where he spent seven years as Country Director for Save the Children. Jeff is a graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica where he received the BSc (Hons) degree in Social Work and the MSc degree in the Social Sciences.Vovler a la lista <<<<<
