A critical assessment of UNDP’s Gender Inequality Index

HDRO Conference Room
28 Marzo 2011

Time:   1:30 – 2:45 pm

The presentation will critically review the Gender Inequality Index (GII), the new gender-related index proposed by UNDP in the 2010 Human Development Report. Whenever feasible, constructive alternatives will be proposed for some of the identified shortcomings of the index.

About the Speaker

Iñaki Permanyer is a Juan de la Cierva research fellow at Centre d’Estudis Demogràfics (CED) in Spain. Prior to his present position, Mr Permanyer was a Fulbright visiting scholar at Cornell University from 2008 to 2010 and he worked several years at the Economics Department of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and at the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain. His research interests are related to the measurement of socio-economic phenomena, including – but not limited to – gender inequality, poverty, well-being, human development, economic inequality and socio-economic polarization. His recent research is focused on the construction of robust multidimensional (i.e: composite) measures that can be applied in the aforementioned areas.
