Poverty and Human Development

The report combines the strengths of a wealth of statistical information on human development and poverty with extensive critical analysis and concrete policy recommendations for poverty reduction. In addition, it provides an extensive profile of poverty and tries to identify some of its causes. The authors recognize that poverty reduction does not merely imply targeted interventions at the local or community level. Rather, it encompasses a broad range of policies that include a country’s basic development strategy, its economic policies, the nature of its public expenditures and the character of its governance structure. Throughout its analysis of a broad range of economic, social, political and cultural issues, the report maintains a consistent focus on poverty.
