Teaching Human Development discipline in higher educational establishments

Uzbekistan: University of World Economy and Diplomacy
30 March – 10 April 2009

In the context of initiated joint work with the higher educational establishments, the is a growing demand in enlarging knowledge and skills of teachers of the higher educational institutions in introduce Human Development course into their teaching practices.

The main purpose of the Training of Trainers is to (i) strengthen knowledge and skills of teachers from main higher educational institutions of Uzbekistan and (ii) graduate trainers for teaching Human Development discipline under the curriculum of their respective high educational institutions who are able to conduct training in Uzbek language at the regional level.

Objectives for the group of general participants and observers:

  1. summarize essential principles of Human Development Concept;
  2. consider in detail aspects and factors of Human Development;
  3. use the methodology of calculating composite human development index and its derivatives;
  4. analyze objectives and prospects of addressing problems on HD in line with MDGs at global and national level;
  5. generate and  exchange ideas on introducing Human Development course in higher educational institutions;
  6. enlarge knowledge and skills not only in the sphere of economy but also in ecology, healthcare, law in conjunction with HD;
  7. strengthen knowledge and skills in core aspects of social policy development from the point of view of HD;
  8. strengthen knowledge and skills in major aspects of welfare improvement and living standard of people in the context of HD.

Objectives for the group of trainers seeking ToT certification

Upon completion of the ToT certified trainer should demonstrate following skills to conduct lectures and seminars on HD discipline:

  1. apply theoretical fundamentals of HD concept: basic components, principles and criteria of Human Development;
  2. apply theoretical knowledge for the analysis and role of international institutions in provision of sustainable development goals;
  3. analyze the level of HD in a country and a region on the basis of HD indexes and other measurements;
  4. estimate the influence of social, institutional and ecological factors on the results and dynamics of sustainable HD at different geopolitical levels;
  5. utilize gained information for identifying the problem of sustainable Human Development in a country or a region;

The result of the given training will be (i) certification of trainers, who will be able to assist in developing Human Development teaching discipline and adapting it in accordance with the curricular of their respective educational entity; (ii) forming the group of trainers to assist UNDP in promoting Human Development Concept for different target groups (including civil servants) in the regions of Uzbekistan.
