Breaking the HIV/AIDS Chain
A Human Development Challenge

The report discusses the general status of HIV/AIDS in Ghana, including a look at the pattern of the disease, how it is regarded by society, its potential impact on the well-being of Ghanaians and the way it is being managed by both the public and private sectors. The underlying argument is that attempts to accelerate development in Ghana, to achieve local development aspirations as well as the MDGs would be undermined unless the state and society at large take direct steps to curb the devast...

NHDR on the MDG's,

The report addresses some of the most persistent causes of poverty in Niger. The country figures today at the bottom of HDI rankings and is on track to miss the MDG’s by a wide margin. The analysis of the education system, nutritional outcomes, maternal and child health and environmental issues pinpoint many of the difficulties that the Nigerian population faces. The report links these issues to the millennium targets and identifies some possible solutions.

HIV/AIDS
A Challenge to Sustainable Human Development

The 2004 NHDR for Nigeria focuses on HIV and AIDS. One in seven Africans living with HIV is a Nigerian, with an estimated 3.2 to 3.8 million people infected. The report finds that there is a generalized epidemic no longer confined to populations at higher risk. HIV and AIDS are exacerbating the problems of poverty, malnutrition, low educational attainment and gender disparities thus threatening the attainment of the MDGs as well as slowing growth and other development objectives. The report l...

Human Development Report

Benin's NHDR 2003 addresses the issue of financing sustainable human development. The Report provides a critical assessment of the uses of existing financial resources for development. By doing so, the Report insists on the need to focus resources on correcting actual discrepancies between the evolution of the GNP and poverty. To that aim, the Report puts the stress on the human dimension of development, regarded as the basic underlying factor of allocation priorities. The effectiveness of fi...

Corruption and Human Development

The report highlights the adverse effects of corruption on the implementation of the human development process, with a particular focus on the fight against poverty. It aims at informing people on the consequences of corruption in terms of critical HD dimensions: durability, equity, productivity, empowerment. The purpose is also to raise debate among development actors and influence the implementation of policies to eradicate corruption in public affairs management. Ultimately, the report he...

HIV/AIDS

The next NHDR in Burundi will deal with HIV/AIDS. The HIV prevalence rate in Burundi has reached very high levels : 10,5% in peri-urban areas, 9,4% in urban zones and 2,5% in rural areas. The report will support a massive strategy of communication on the reality of the disease in the country. It will be the first major publication releasing the results of the latest HIV/AIDS national survey updating the results of the 1990 survey. For the first time, it will highlight the influence of cultura...

Participatory Governance for Human Development

Kenya's third human development report finds that poor governance is a leading cause of lack of human development in the country. Economic stagnation, dire poverty and social inequalities are the result of continued corruption, inefficient management of public resources, and the exclusion of the poor in the development process. The report finds that transparency and accountability are lacking in Kenya's government structures. In effect, it encourages a people-centered approach to better go...
