Information-Society and Sustainable Human Development on Cape Verde

Breaking the HIV/AIDS Chain
A Human Development Challenge

The report discusses the general status of HIV/AIDS in Ghana, including a look at the pattern of the disease, how it is regarded by society, its potential impact on the well-being of Ghanaians and the way it is being managed by both the public and private sectors. The report addresses some of the most persistent causes of poverty in Niger. The country figures today at the bottom of HDI rankings and is on track to miss the MDG’s by a wide margin. The analysis of the education system, nutritional outcomes, maternal and child health and environmental issues pinpoint many of the difficulties that the Nigerian population faces. The report links these issues to the millennium targets and identifies some possible solutions.

HIV/AIDS
A Challenge to Sustainable Human Development

The 2004 NHDR for Nigeria focuses on HIV and AIDS. One in seven Africans living with HIV is a Nigerian, with an estimated 3.2 to 3.8 million people infected. The report finds that there is a generalized epidemic no longer confined to populations at higher risk. HIV and AIDS are exacerbating the problems of poverty, malnutrition, low educational attainment and gender disparities thus threatening the attainment of the MDGs as well as slowing growth and other development objectives. The report l...

Bolivia's Potential

The current report for 2004 serves as a follow-up to the previous empirical and theoretical stock and explores the possibility of strengthening human development in Bolivia in the framework of the new information technology paradigm. The report addresses the question of whether Bolivia, a poor and underdeveloped country, is ready to engage itself actively in the information society and globalization. In this context, the 2004 HDR suggests to the country a Bolivian way to techno-informational...
