The role of NGOs in assisting victims of human trafficking

Topic
20,000+ persons are trafficked into the U.S. on a yearly basis, approximately 1500 have been rescued and certified, all of them with the assistance of Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs). The gap is big and more awareness, education and support from the government of sending and receiving countries are needed in order to reduce the number of persons that are victimized due to poverty and injustice.
About the Speaker
Carmen Maquilon is the Program Director at Catholic Charities Immigrant Services, Diocese of Rockville Centre in Long Island, NY where she has worked for the past 18 years. Carmen and her family moved from Colombia to the US in the mid-seventies; she has a degree in Business & Management with a concentration in Accounting from the State University of New York. Carmen was promoted to Director of Immigrant Services in 2004, where she has been responsible for directing a team of 21 lawyers and counselors in servicing over 10,000 immigrants and citizens per year. These services include representation in immigration court, deportation cases, citizenship and naturalization applications, refugee resettlement, services to victims of human trafficking and immigrant victims of crimes to name a few. Carmen is on the Anti-Human Trafficking Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, a board member of the New York Immigration Coalition and the Long Island Immigrant Alliance; she also chairs the Immigration Committee for the NYS Council of Catholic Charities Directors. Carmen is a fully accredited representative with the Board of Immigration Appeals.
