In recent years, largely thanks to widespread awareness raising and multi-level partnerships on the topic, a paradigm shift is beginning to occur on 'gender and climate change'. Nations from every region of the world now recognize the importance of integrating gender perspectives into climate negotiating and planning. And yet, fast-track issues like reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and climate finance are moving full steam ahead - business as usual - without women's voices sufficiently at the table. For resiliency, efficacy and sustainability, especially in the context of Rio+20, the 'green economy' and the MDGs, this is dangerous - and threatens major progress toward goals. Might women's organizing and leadership be the key to sustainability?
About the Speaker
Cate Owren is Executive Director of the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), an international advocacy organization working to ensure that women's rights, sustainable development, and social, economic and environmental justice are at the heart of global and national policies, plans and practices. Cate has more than ten years' experience working to advance women's rights and gender equality across a range of organizations - grassroots to international - and has enjoyed nearly 5 years at WEDO, working on climate change and other major sustainable development issues. She has a Master's degree in Socioeconomic Development and a Bachelor's in Theater and English Literature.
Liane Schalatek is Associate Director of the Heinrich Boell Stiftung North America, a non-profit organization affiliated with the German Green Party focusing on democracy promotion, gender equality and human rights, sustainable development, particularly climate and energy policies, with 26 offices worldwide and partners in more than 60 countries. With more than 10 years of experience in global governance, specifically international trade and finance, as well as the promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment, Liane's current work focuses on international climate finance, with an emphasis on public climate finance flows and on equitable access to climate funding. A special consideration of her current work is addressing the gender dimensions of climate change and climate finance. She holds an MA in International Affairs as well as an MA in Political Science and Political Economy.
