Warning on Climate Dangers for Nicaragua

Prensa Latina

Managua, Apr 17 (Prensa Latina) Serious dangers because of the effects of world climate changes are threatening Nicaragua, according to warnings contained in the 2007-2008 United Nations Human Development Report.

The document warned on the dangers of the attack of human beings against their own environment, which may cause droughts, floods and intensive hunger, among others.

During the presentation of the text at the National Engineering University in this capital Thursday, there were several calls for the preservation of the environment and the protection of natural resources.

One of them was expressed by environmentalist Jaime Incer, who recognized the effort of the countries in development in function of preserving the world from pillaging.

Incer mentioned the case of the Energy Revolution which is not a product of Australia or any other developed country, because it arose in Cuba like a saving expression and with which consumption of more fuel and atmosphere damages because of the emission of more polluting gases is avoided.

In the case of Nicaragua, its geographical situation makes it a potential target for high intensity hurricanes, intensified by the effects of climatic change, the document said.

The report talks about the critical situation of the country, where more than two million people, of a total of 5.4 million inhabitants, live in severe poverty and perceive incomes in less than two dollars a day.

The food crisis faced by this nation, in spite of the government's efforts, was also mentioned in the report.

Nicaraguans lost 50 percent of their food producing capacity in 2007, because of the devastating effects of Hurricane Felix and later 50 days of rain, which took the Executive to declare a national disaster.
