NEW DELHI: The warning against carbon emissions just got more urgent. The UN Human Development
Report said on Tuesday that unless the global community agrees to cut emissions by half by 2050, the world
will face huge economic setbacks and ecological catastrophe.
"We are on the verge of seeing human development reverse for the first time in 30 years," Kevin Watkins, the
report's author was quoted as saying. The report said poor nations would be hit the hardest as they are the
least equipped to face nature's fury, manifest in devastating storms and droughts.
The report sets down targets and a roadmap to cut back emissions on the eve of the UN climate change
summit, scheduled in Bali next month.
"The message for Bali is the world can't afford to wait; it has less than a decade to change course," said
Watkins.
