Béla’s presentation will focus on different data sources which are available for migration research from an international perspective and review the possibilities and pitfalls for each of them.
About the Speaker
Béla Hovy is the Chief of the Migration Section of the United Nations Population Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, New York. From 1993 to 2005, he was responsible for statistics at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1989 to 2002, Mr. Hovy worked in the Policy Section as well as in the Mortality and Migration Section of the Population Division. From 1988 to 1989, he was based at the Institut de Formation et de Recherches Démographiques (IFORD) in Yaoundé, Cameroun. Mr. Hovy holds an advanced degree in Human Geography of Developing Countries from Utrecht University, and has studied Development Economics at Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands. He has authored reports and articles and made numerous presentations on asylum, refugee and international migration. He has carried out field missions, organized workshops and provided training to improve data collection in different parts of the world. Mr. Hovy has served on two committees of the US National Research Council and is currently a commissioner on the commission to improve international migration data for development research, established by the Center for Global Development.
