Success and Failure in Human Development

UN Delegates Dining Room
19 mars 2010

Time: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

To celebrate the human development approach, and to reflect on its continued relevance to the Millennium Development Goals, HDRO organised a Mahbub ul Haq Award Lecture, presented by Professor Frances Stewart, winner of the 2009 Mahbub ul Haq Award.

The Mahbub ul Haq Award for Outstanding Contribution to Human Development was created to honour Mahbub ul Haq (1934-1998), a leading development thinker who adapted Amartya Sen’s capability approach to establish the human development paradigm. The Award is presented to a leading national, regional or world figure who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to furthering understanding and progress about human development. Previous Mahbub ul Haq awards have been presented to Fernando Cardoso (2002), Fazle Hasan Abed (2004), and Sheila Watt-Cloutier (2007).

Professor Stewart is one of the key figures who have been associated with the Human Development Report series since its inception in1990. She has made contributions to developing, teaching and promoting the empirical and policy foundations of human development which have been influential around the world. As a member of the United Nations Committee on Development Planning in New York, she participates in global policy discourse and as President of the Human Development and Capabilities Association, she inspires a new generation of thinkers and practitioners.
