There is an increasing gap between what official statistics say about economic performance and how people perceive their own living conditions. Among other concerns about this democracy is the risk that people lose faith in governments’ ability to address what matters for them, which in turn has has implications for the functioning of democracy. The OECD started to address these concerns over 10 years ago, which led to the launch of the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies in 2008 in partnership with other international organisations. We will present how the Global Project is contributing to the measuring progress agenda, issues of civic participation in creation and communication of new indicators of progress, and finally, what innovative tools are being developed to promote this endeavour.
The main aim of Wikiprogress is to become a global platform for the assessment of societal progress by harnessing knowledge from a centralized web based community who are seeking out fresh social, environmental and economic measures of progress. Key background references include the Global Project initiatives Wikiprogress and Wikigender, OECD Development Centre’s Perspectives on Global Development, current work on social cohesion, as well as the Commission on the Measurement of Economic and Social Progress.
Angela Costrini Hariche is the Project Manager of Wikiprogress initiated by the OECD-hosted Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies. She is also an OECD Development Centre researcher for the 2011 publication, Perspectives on Global Development: Social Cohesion. Prior to joining the OECD, she worked with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations based in Liberia in the field of communications and information technology. Angela holds a Masters degree in New Media and Cultural studies from the Open University in the UK.
