Corruption and Human Development

The report highlights the adverse effects of corruption on the implementation of the human development process, with a particular focus on the fight against poverty. It aims at informing people on the consequences of corruption in terms of critical HD dimensions: durability, equity, productivity, empowerment. The purpose is also to raise debate among development actors and influence the implementation of policies to eradicate corruption in public affairs management. Ultimately, the report helps improve national structures in charge of the fight against corruption.

Of the 500 people surveyed for the report, including government administrators, 95 per cent said corruption is a widespread problem. The main causes, researchers found, include low salaries, poverty, crumbling moral and social values, mismanagement, financial pressure, customs, poor governance, and uncontrolled economic liberalization
