Harnessing Technology and Innovations to Accelerate Human Development in Lesotho

The 2024 Lesotho National Human Development Report examines how technology and innovation can help accelerate progress in health, education, incomes, and overall well-being. While Lesotho has made important gains in human development over the past three decades, significant challenges remain, including poverty, inequality, gender disparities, limited digital access, and vulnerability to climate change.

The report highlights technology as a key driver of inclusive and sustainable development. It calls for greater investment in digital infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, expansion of e-government services, stronger STEM education, and improved access to ICTs. It also emphasizes the need to bridge gender and geographic digital divides so that women, youth, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities can benefit equally from technological progress.

Looking ahead, the report advocates for a people-centred innovation agenda supported by strategic investments in research, education, healthcare, and climate resilience. It recommends strengthening partnerships among government, academia, the private sector, and development partners to build a knowledge-based economy. By leveraging technology and innovation effectively, Lesotho can improve service delivery, create jobs, enhance resilience to climate change, and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals while ensuring no one is left behind.
