The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) convened 12 international experts from academia and research institutes in New York on 12-13 February 2018 for a two-day meeting to discuss human development measurements and the way forward.
Led and facilitated by Selim Jahan, Director of the Human Development Report Office, and Milorad Kovacevic, Chief Statistician at HDRO, the debate aimed to present, discuss and propose how the methodologies of current human development indices can be improved so that indices stay relevant in monitoring progress in human development, with particular aims at strengthening the usefulness of the indices for policy debates within the broader 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
Presentations focused on issues related to the family of human development indices, including the Human Development Index (HDI), Gender Inequality Index (GII), and Gender Development Index (GDI), and looked for ways to include environmental sustainability and strengthen linkages with SDG indicators.

Marc Fleurbaey is Robert E. Kuenne Professor in Economics and Humanistic Studies, and Professor of Public Affairs and the University Center for Human Values. His research has focused on the analysis of equality of opportunity, risk, redistributive taxation, climate policy, and on seeking solutions to famous impossibilities of social choice theory.

Carmen Herrero Blanco is a Professor of Economics at the University of Alicante. Her research focuses on fairness and health, and economics.
Prof. Stephan Klasen, University of Gottingen, Germany
Stephan Klasen is Professor of Development Economics at the University of Göttingen. His research focuses mostly on issues of poverty, inequality, environment, and gender.
Prof. Bruno Oberle, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland
Bruno Oberle is Chair of the Green Economy and Resource Governance program at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). His work focuses on the transition to a society which generates greater benefits with less depletion of resources, thus respecting the limits of sustainability on our planet.
Prof. Iñaki Permanyer, Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics, Spain
Iñaki Permanyer is a Ramón y Cajal research fellow working at the Center for Demographic Studies (CED) since 2010. His research focuses on inclusive growth, inequality, poverty, demography, human development, family planning, social choice and welfare.
Prof. Jose Pineda, University of British Columbia, Canada
José Pineda is an Adjunct Professor at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. He has extensive research experience in the fields of human development, macroeconomics, international economics, green economy, sustainable development and econometrics.
Prof. Sanjay Reddy, The New School, USA
Sanjay G. Reddy is an Associate Professor of Economics at The New School for Social Research. His research interests include political economy, development, inequality, poverty, globalization, integrative social analysis, and history of economic thought.
Dr. Michaela Saisana, Joint Research Center, European Commission, Belgium
Michaela Saisana is a senior Scientific Officer and leads the European Commission’s Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (COIN). Her research deals with sensitivity analysis, composite indicators, multicriteria analysis, multivariate analysis, data envelopment analysis and multi-objective optimization.
Prof. Suman Seth, University of Leeds, UK
Suman Seth is a Lecturer in Economics at the Leeds University Business School and a Research Associate at the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on development economics with special emphasis on measurement methodologies and policy-oriented applications of multidimensional welfare and poverty measures.
Prof. Antonio Villar, University Pablo de Olavide, Spain
Antonio Villar is a Professor of Economics at the University Pablo de Olavide. His research focuses on microeconomic theory, in particular welfare economics and social choice, and general equilibrium with a special interest on the effects of increasing returns to scale in market economics.
Prof. Eduardo Zambrano, California Polytechnic State University, USA
Professor Zambrano is a Professor of Economics at the Orfalea College of Business at California Polytechnic State University. He is recognized internationally for his research related to Welfare Economics and the measurement of Human Development.
