The goal of reducing inequalities is enshrined in the 2030 Agenda and its central pledge of leaving no one behind, which recognizes the need for inclusion and empowerment of the most vulnerable. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10 aims to “reduce inequality between and within countries,” but the other goals also envision advancing equity.
While there is some international consensus that inequality is critically important, there is much less agreement on what to do about it, or even how to define it. UNDP’s 2019 Human Development Report (2019 HDR), to be released in the last quarter of the year, will delve into these issues and beyond by focusing on understanding the many dimensions of inequality most important to people’s well-being, and what is driving them.
In the lead up to the 2019 HDR, the Human Development Report Office is organizing several events to raise awareness about the report and also seek insight from experts across disciplines on the issue of inequality.
Under the umbrella of the SDG Festival of Action, which took place in Bonn, Germany, on 2-4 May 2019, the Human Development Report Office organized an energetic debate on inequality bringing together thought-leaders representing civil society organizations, academia, government, international organizations, and youth leaders from around the world.
