Overlapping Hardships: Poverty and Climate Hazards

MPI 2025 Launch Poster

On 17 October, marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the 2025 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report will be launched virtually in partnership with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) at UNDP.

Titled Overlapping Hardships: Poverty and Climate Hazards, the report overlays data on climate hazards and multidimensional poverty to assess, for the first time, how exposed poor people are to climate challenges. Speakers at the launch webinar will reflect on the findings of the report and what this means for human-centred climate action in the lead up to COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Hosted by Pedro Conceição, Director of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO), UNDP, the launch webinar will open with remarks by Haoliang Xu, Acting Administrator and Under Secretary-General, Associate Administrator, UNDP.

Key findings of the report will be presented by:

  • Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI)
  • Nabamallika Dehingia, Statistics Specialist, HDRO, UNDP

Following the presentation, a panel of high-level speakers will further explore the report’s theme in a discussion moderated by Pedro Conceição.
